5Light enough, solid performance, and super comfortable
By Andy
I have been a big fan of Asics running shoes since I ran cross country in high school. Although I didn't run quite as regularly after I graduated, I still maintained some semblance of a running schedule - always using Asics as my footwear of choice.Picking a quality running shoe is not as simple as finding the cheapest pair that fits. There are a lot of aspects of the choice to consider - the shape of your foot, the way your foot strikes the pavement, the angle of your stride - it's seemingly endless. I picked up these shoes after a recommendation from my local running shoe store - many running-focused stores will give you a full diagnostics run-down of your running patterns, using cameras to record your strides in order to analyze your footfalls. The Gel Oracle is a fairly neutral, stable shoe. It has some nice arch support and the shoe cups your heel nicely. I've only put a few dozen miles on them so far, but with most shoes, there is a steep adjustment curve. Not so with these - they have been comfortable since day one! I recommend them if you're looking for a shoe with a lot of support while still maintaining a fairly neutral stride.

4Nothing beats a professional fitting
By Beware the candy
I'd never had an experience buying shoes like the one where I had myself fitted by a professional that put me in to the ASICS Gel Nimbus 13s. I'd never put on a shoe before that felt that perfect. The problem arose when those shoes wore out and I needed to replace them, only to find they were no longer available (and I searched the internet over). So I began researching on the ASICS site to find the closest replacement I could. If anything, my GN-13s had worn out perhaps a little faster than I expected and so I opted for a more structured shoe to fit my landing pattern. I like these shoes thus far, although I've only done a few mild workouts in them. But they don't have that perfect fit I had with the GN-13s. Just hope the shins hold up when I really start working these out.

5Great comfortable shoes

Quick Note: I did notice that his shoe will increase your height by 1 to 1-1/2 inches, which is great if you are 5'5 like me.

1Best shoe CONCEPT ever!
By Diane M. Junker
When I first got these shoes, I wrote a glowing 5-star review. I apologize to anyone who bought a pair based on that review. While I still love the concept (I am an LMT and think they're great for your feet) this particular shoe is terrible. Both my son and I had holes in our toes in less than a month. We've since switched to the Vibram brand and there is a remarkable differnce. I've worn them almost daily for 4 months and they look like new. We even hiked Yosemite in them! They're alot more money, but worth every penny. So, again, I still love the concept, but not this particular shoe. If I hadn't been so busy after the holidays, I probably would have returned them for a refund.

2Walk Carefully. They Rip Easily!
By traveler_blake
I have very mixed feelings about these shoes. As far as comfort, they are probably the best shoes I have ever worn. My wife and I went to Hawaii and hiked 8 miles on the Kalalau trail through every terrain imaginable wearing these shoes. Our feet were somewhat worn at the end, but whose weren't? We had no problems with the support or anything. The MAJOR flaw with these shoes, however, is the durability. My first pair of shoes ripped on my big toe right where the fabric meets the rubber of the sole. This wasn't after heavy use, either. I ripped it after bumping my toe on a staircase literally 2 minutes after wearing them for the first time! Thankfully, I was able to exchange that pair.My wife wasn't so lucky. After we finished hiking the aforementioned trail, she had ripped holes in nearly every toe. She had problems with sand and dirt filling the shoes and grating against her feet. I had learned how to walk more softly in my shoes, so I didn't experience any rips. For that reason alone I would discourage purchasing them if you are planning to get heavy use out of them.

1Defective
By John Laurence
For a start this product was a poor imitation of the original five finger shoes, the sole is way to thick, however the grouping of the 4th and 5th toes is not a bad idea. Nevertheless the shoe became un-stiched after one wearing.

Product Description

MINIMALIST RUNNING / BAREFOOT RUNNING With 200,000 nerve endings, 33 major muscles, 28 bones, 19 ligaments; the human foot is a biomechanical masterpiece. No heel, no midsole, no arch support, no gimmicks! VIVOBAREFOOT helps encourages us to move as million years of evolution intended - barefoot. The VIVOBAREFOOT difference is in the sole. They make a series of constructions specifically designed for varying elements, terrains, and activities. Many experts believe the shoes we wear not only cast the foot in a protective form, but can also weaken our foot and leg muscles, leaving them underdeveloped and more prone to injury. And while there are many occasions where traditional footwear is essential for protection, safety, and security, it is equally important to stimulate and exercise our feet in a more natural state on a regular basis. The Ultra, a lightweight barefoot amphibious running shoe. Suitable for: light trail cross training, water sports, long runs and general beachside and urban barefoot exploration.

5The perfect (well almost) Asphalt shoe
By Tod Hardin
I don't live in an amazing place like Portland, where running is as much a part of life as McDonald's is to a seven year old. I live in Texas, and to be more specific West Texas. There are no beautiful, rolling hills with wonderful, cushy trails on which to patter your feet...there is asphalt. Asphalt and the twist and turns of residential neighbourhoods with barking dogs and cars driven by old ladies that can't help but steer their Cadillacs in your direction because their hands follow their eyes.I, like many of you , wanted to see what this "barefoot revaluation" was all about, so I did my research and made the "transition." I have to say, I'm now a believer. Also, like many of you, I own five or six pairs of minimalist shoes because we are all looking for that Holy Grail. I had heard of this unusual shoe company that I could never remember their name, and when I did, felt kind of stupid saying it because it was not short and catchy and didn't rhyme with bikey or basic. It was quite by chance that I ended up with a pair of Vivobarefoot Ultras anyway. I had read all the great reviews about the Evos, but they were too damn expensive and heavy. Amazon had a pair of Ultras for $50 or so, so that was my opportunity to try out this company at a more affordable price. I got the shoes in, and long story short, grew to LOVE them for the types of roads that I run on. Many Ultra wearers don't use the insert, I do. Many complain about the sizing issue, if you're going to wear the insert, size up, if not, stick to your normal size. Some complain about the squishiness of the shoes as well. Maybe they're too soft for Portland runners, but after 10+ miles on asphalt, a little squishy ain't bad.Now the bad news. According to Vivobarefoot, these shoes are not really designed as a pure running shoe, therefore the sole is not as durable as the famous Evo sole. Well, at a third of the price of Evos, and with good technique (that red "V" on the bottom of the sole is there for a reason), I've been able to get 300 miles out of my Ultras, so far. I think I'll get a couple of hundred more. This makes them almost the perfect asphalt shoe, for me. If the design team would put just a bit of rubber across the ball of the foot, I think I could almost double that. That's why they are ALMOST the perfect asphalt shoe; durability of the sole is a bit lower than ideal, but then again, they are not designed for what I use them for exactly. If you are like me, have transitioned to minimalist shoes, and run mainly on asphalt, the Ultras may fit the bill for you as well. If not, then they are worth it just to wear and try to explain to folks exactly what those things are that you have on your feet.

3Great concept but needs some more work
By N. Yomark
I have now had these for about three weeks. Having a friend who had a pair of Evo IIs and being a bare foot runner I was very excited to try these out. I have run in Vibrims quite a bit and really only have two complaints with them. That they don't breathe well, and they actually have quite a bit between your feet and the road. The Vivo Ultras definitely solved these two issues; unfortunately I have two other issues that are even worse. The first is the sizing. They seem to run smaller than the Vibrims, especially with the bootie in. Without it they are about the right size, but when installed they are a little small. As they run in full sizes, my fear is that the next size up would fit fine with the bootie installed but be much too large without it.The second is the flexibility of the back of the heel. It is much too stiff and after only about a quarter mile of running barefoot in them they chopped into my achilles and made it bleed. If I run with the booties or socks it is not as bad however this kind of defeats some of the point. In fact the pain of it digging in changed my stride enough that I started lading on my heel to avoid it. Probably the worst thing "barefoot" shoes could do.In all they do feel the ground really well, breathe even better, and the quality of the shoes is excellent. However without more flexibility in the heel I can't run in them barefoot which negates much of its strengths.

5Vivo's are the shizznittey
By Brian
I was looking to buy the ultra's in gray.. And the red was all they had in my size. But I'm happy now that it worked out the way it did! I'm a barefoot runner and take my shoes of where ever I can.. Which isn't at the gym^^ but if your like me and hate 5 fingers. Then this company is for you! A wide tow box, supper thin sole.. You can feel everything. Your feet will feel free.. Unlike the other guys. Ive got 2 pairs of vivo's now and I'll have 3 or 4 in the next few months.Ok a little about sizing. I'm a 44 in vivo's. And the ultras would be to tight with the liner. Nike frees 11 1/2. Clarks 10 1/2. Army combat boots 10 1/2 wide. Hope this helps.

5New Balance MR1400 Review
By SpaceRanger
This is a very light weight racing flat which I have worn for a half marathon, clocking my personal best. With this, I also met my training goal of under 25 mins for 5 km. Due to the thin sole and limited cut, I am using it purely for races or trial races. Another pair of trainer (ASICS DS Trainer 15) is used for normal mileages.Nice striking color combination, glows nicely during the dusk runs. The cutting/sizing of this model is a little smaller than the usual running shoes. I need to wear thin socks as my little toe was a little squashed when a pair of thick socks was worn during the said half marathon. If you are used to wearing thick socks, try to get half a size larger, or try it out at the store if you can help it.Happy Running!

4Huge improvement on traditional running shoes
By RunningMan
Really comfortable, the thinner flexible sole allows my foot to flex instead of being trapped rigidly like traditional cushioning running shoes. I actually find that I feel better cushioned with these shoes than my previous runners, which were supposed to be high cushioning. The heel is quite soft so they would probably even still be good for heel strike runners as well. They are also really good for general wear while walking, I need to find a pair of shoes like this that I can use as casual shoes (coloring & style doesn't really suit...).

5Brilliant, start slow though!
By Mike Lovell
I was suffering from "runners knee" for about a week after I tried to run consistently for anything above about 15 minutes (at a steady 10:00 mpm pace). So basically I couldn't get up any kind of decent running schedule, so I started to look into barefoot running. I started walking my dog barefoot and working on strengthening my feet, and when my last bout of "runners knee" cleared up I started thinking about running. I didn't think my gym would allow barefoot treadmill running so I invested in a pair of Vibram's.First day at the gym and I started running and I'd reached the 15 minute mark and no knee trouble, so I kept going and upped the speed and did another 10 minutes. No pain at all. Now anyone who's started running in these knows what I'm going to say next! ...... They REALLY work your calf's because they force you to land on the balls of your feet (exactly as you should run) so about 2 days after my first run damn did I have DOMS in my calves, I was walking around like a croquet hoop! So friendly advice, start slow! After that initial adaption my calf muscles I was fine going forward. No more knee pain, I ran an hour for the first time yesterday (~5.5 miles), I'd have never been able to do that before.

5Great shoes!
By imperialsucka
I will never run in regular shoes again. I had REALLY bad shin splints for the last two years. One run in these and my shins didn't hurt at all. None. I almost teared up from the lack of pain. My calves were sore for about 3 weeks due to these shoes changing the way I run. Not painful, just sore. I've noticed that I am faster in these. I don't have a big stride anymore but lots of short steps that have cut 2 minutes off my 4 mile run time.I normally run 4 miles M/W/F and 2 miles on T/T. I LOVE these shoes. Never going to run in anything else again!

3A slight departure from the original.
By Linh
I found these to be a slight departure from the original five finger concept of "near barefoot running." The tread has become quite aggressive and there is almost what could be considered arch support. Additionally, because of two hot spots created by the internal stitching, I have to wear socks, which creates even more padding and road isolation than found in models like the original KSO and Sprint. The one saving feature that keeps me using them is that there is still no heel cushioning which means I still have to focus on barefoot running technique. They are pretty good for winter running though as long as conditions are dry. The material is warmer than my Sprints (which are my favorite model by far).

5Excellent trail racing shoe
By Trailrunner
Bought these shoes specifically for racing in the Asics XTrail, a trail race which includes various conditions dirt, mud, streams, rocks, 854m summit then descent, etc. They performed perfectly in all conditions. My buddy was racing with Salomon XT Wings and in the steepest, muddiest climbs, my Speedcross would grip and stick where his foot would slide. Outstanding traction. Did not get wet until many miles and many puddles and mud holes, and even then stayed relatively dry. They did feel like they got a bit looser once wet and I could have stopped to tighten them up a bit. Not by much as I opted to keep racing and not stop with no problems, including a steep, fast and slippery descent. I experienced none of the inner soles problems mentioned by some, for which I was a bit aprehensive. My only worry would be for racing on hot days, for which I would recommend you do not buy the climashield (CS) but the regular Speedcross version, which I haven't tried. My feet stayed warm despite a start and summit below freezing. Perfect for Fall/Winter races. Also the lugs do wear a bit faster on asphalt, but then you should not be looking at Speedcross if you're looking for road racers. Very satisfied with my purchase.

4Purpose-built!
By Open Mind
The shoe is perfectly designed and nothing missing. Every feature is there for the purpose of running on trails and mixed terrain...including mud and wet conditions. The shoe is not wide and with "winter" socks is a snug fit. I took a chance after reading alot of reviews, etc. and ordered 1/2 size larger. With "Smartwool PhD" socks it's a great fit. The toe box plus the forefoot exterior don't allow any give. When compared to La Sportiva these shoes are not as wide size for size.

By Alphonso Carioti
Nike has a double-winner with this Training shoe. Good looks and great performance. The all black, low-profile platform looks good in casual and semi-casual attire. The non-slip traction of the soles make this footwear more than competent on my wet boat deck.I'd definitely recommend the shoe to anyone looking for a comfortable, inexpensive, name-brand sneaker that looks very presentable.
