Works great for long runs
By SurfGuy
I've had these 2012 Cloudrunners for about 2 months now (~250 miles). The first time I put the shoes on, I noticed the extra cushioning instantly. As a slightly heavier runner (190 pounds), I've constantly battled knee and hip pains on my longer runs. These shoes have greatly alleviated my pains, which is why I felt compelled to write a review. Additionally, after 2 months of hard running, these shoes have kept their cushion much longer than I expected.I plan to buy these shoes again, they're great for long runs!

On Cloud 9
By Torch
Runners and shoes are a complicated thing. What works for one runner does not work for EVERY runner. There are just too many variables to consider. Thanks to years of military service, I am prone to loads of knee pain and endurance running has always been an issue, until now.I could write a design dissertation on the packaging and the styling of the shoe, but really what matters is the performance. On takes a slightly different approach to their shoes than normal. Instead of designing shoes based on arch, they design them to work well at a certain speed range. The Cloudrunner is designed for runners at a slower endurance pace of an 8 to 9 1/2 minute mile. Again, all runners being different, I find they work best even a little slower. I tried them on a 5k at a sub 8 minute pace and I honestly did not like them, but when jogging along for a half marathon at a 9 to 9:15 mile, the On Cloudrunners really shined. Even at a 10 minute mile, they feel really good. The Cloudrunners are a bit on the heavy side compared to other neutral or minimal shoes, but they are not much heavier than a good stability shoe and even on long runs I have never noticed the extra weight. Besides the CloudTec pillows on the bottom of the shoes, there are a couple of other differences from typical running shoes. The toe box is a bit wider and does not taper to as fine a point. Also on the insole there is a "button" that helps splay out the toes. This creates a really stable platform for pushing off. The tongue is partially sewn to the upper on the side to keep in in an optimal space. The mesh on the side of the shoe is stout and durable but still plenty breathable to keep the foot cool.I just started on my 4th and 5th pair of On Cloudrunners (that is a LOT of miles) which is in itself, quite an endorsement from me. I have not liked a shoe this much since the Asics Gel Lyte of the early 1990s (the ones with the split tongue). It's kept my knee problems down to a minimum and allowed me to train more and run longer distances more comfortably. If you are a seasoned runner looking for a good 5k or 10K shoe, pass on the Cloudrunner (try the Cloudsurfer or Cloudracer). That is not what the shoe is designed for and you will not be happy with it. But if you are new to running, or you have knee problems, or are looking for a good distance running shoe then the Cloudrunner may be a great shoe for you, it certainly has been for me.
